Cornwall continues to be the go-to summer destination for many families. It is famous for its surfing and surf schools as well as cliff-top walks and attractions including the Eden Project. If you’re travelling with the kids we have created a guide of things to do with the kids this summer in the UK and we include a few ideas that are just a short drive from Cornwall. Cornwall also offers a host of culinary delights, as well as the areas’ most well-known chef, Rick Stein, many other chefs have opened establishments in Cornwall including Jamie Oliver, Nathan Outlaw and Paul Ainsworth.
Popular towns on the north coast of Cornwall include Padstow, home to numerous Rick Stein eateries and Rock. Rock has been referred to as Britains’ St Tropez and the Kensington of Cornwall. The Camel Estuary lends itself to windsurfing, sailing, boating and fishing. There is a regular ferry to nearby Padstow where you can pick up a boat trip or visit the Padstow Museum or a local brewing company. Surrounded by glorious beaches, there are 7 bays within a 5-minute drive of the town.
West Cornwall is home to Lands End, St Ives and The Lizard Peninsula and Penzance, to name just a few popular destinations. St Ives is a seemingly subtropical oasis and has been attracting artists for decades. This is reflected in the various museums in the area, including The Barbara Hepworth Museum, Jo Downs Glass Gallery and The Tate at St Ives. There is also a school of painting offering various classes including beginners.
The Lizard Peninsula is almost an island, girded on 3 sides by the sea and by the Helford River on the 4th side. Helstone is the biggest town on the Peninsula, predominated by Victorian and Georgian architecture and renowned for its’ spring folk festival and flora day where all the shops and houses are decked out with gorse and bluebells.
Looe is located in South Cornwall and is still a working fishing port. Watch the day catch being auctioned on the quay or pick some fish up to take home with you. Again, Looe offers a wide selection of eateries from fish and chips to gourmet fair.
Truro is Cornwall’s only city; it offers a yearlong festival programme as well as weekly food markets. The local shops are varied, offering everything from fashion to locally made produce.
Polperro is famous for its’ seafood, the town is free of traffic, although there is a tram, allowing you to wander freely through the streets. Footpaths from the town allow coastal walks to Looe and Hannafore beach.
